You can describe the weather with 'e' or 'i' (but be consistent). You will hear lots of both.
It seems to be a regional/personal preference.

The explanation I've heard is that 'i' is when you're thinking of aimsir / sìde, and 'e' refers to 'an latha', but I don't honestly think it's that systematic.

A Mhairead, the book Everyday Gaelic by Morag Macneill is a respectable, detailed, topic-based phrase book, updated not that long ago, and quite useful as more idiomatic and natural than dialogues in grammar-based courses. It has 'imitated' pronunciation, which the experts don't like (not IPA), but as a rough initial guide can be helpful.

A Ruairidh, tha, tha sin fuar, haha. Tha mi à Wisconsin. Tha e eadar Canada is Chicago. Thàinig mi do dh'Alba an-uiridh oir tha mo phàrantan ag obair ann an Cill Rìmhinn a-nis.

A fhaoileag, tapadh leat. Tha mi ga iarraidh a-nis! Chan eil mi a' leughadh IPA glè mhath fhathast co-dhiù. (Bidh mi a' leughadh beagan cànanachas san t-oilthigh.)

Tha i beagan liath sa mhadainn, ach tha mi a' faicinn gorm air cùlaibh nan neòil!

Rory, yes, that is cold, haha. I'm from Wisconsin. It's between Canada and Chicago. I came to Scotland last year because my parents work in St Andrews now. ... Faoileag, thank you! I want it now! I don't read IPA very well yet anyway. (I will be studying a little linguistics in university.) ... It is a little grey this morning, but I see blue behind the clouds!

'S e latha spliugach a th'ann ann an Lunnainn aig an àm seo.

It's a humid day with intermittent rain in London just now.

Chan eil i cho blàth an-seo (St Petersburg, an Ruis).
B' ann o cionn trì seachdainean co-dhiù a chaidh an teasachadh a stad san taighean, agus tha am flat agam gu math fuar.
Nach b' e nas fhearr nam biodh teinntean no stòbha Ruiseanach againne!

It's not so warm here (St Petersburg, Russia).
The heating of houses ceased at least three weeks ago, and my flat is rather cold.
Really, it would be better to have a fireplace or Russian stove!

Chan eil ach teasachadh dealanach agam nach eil uabhasach èifeachdach ach tha smachd agam fhìn air!

I only have eletrical heating whish isn't very efficient, but I can control it myself

-> sna taighean

Obh obh, a Luchag! Tha mi 'n dòchas gum bheil an t-sìde nas fhearr a-nis. Tha i blàth ann an Alba.

Oh no! I hope the weather is better now. It's warm in Scotland.

Uill, tha i blàth a-nis. Fada ro bhlàth, chanainn fiù 's teth. 37 ceum an-dè :grian:

Well, it's warm now. Far too warm, I'd even say hot 37° yesterday.

Tha, tha i blàth a-nis, 's dòcha gun do thòisich an samhradh fa dhòigh.
Tha an gaoth gu math àrd san làithean seo ge-tà.

Yes, it's warm now, maybe the summer began at last.
The wind is rather high though.

A GhunChleoc, tha sin dìreach uabhasach! A bheil sibh ceart gu leòr an-siud?

It's really terrible! Are you OK there?

Tha i blàth gu dearbh an-siud, a GhunChleoc! Chan eil ach 19 an-seo, 22 uaireannan. Ach tha na làithean glé fhada - ach chan eil iad cho fada ris na làithean ann an Ruis!

It is warm indeed there! It's only 19 here, 22 sometimes. But the days are very long - but not as long as Russia!

'S i an dùthaich fìor mhòr a tha anns an Ruis.
Tha na làithean glè fhada an-seo, ach tha iad nas giorra ann am Mosco, mar eisimpleir (leis an domhan-leud mu 55 puingean(???) a thuath, ma sgrìobh mi seo ceart).

Russia is really great (i.e. large).
The days are here (in St-Petersburg), but they are shorter in Moscow, for example (with the latitude about 55 degree North, if I wrote this right -- both in Gaelic and in English :mc: ).

Welll, the wind and the rain are back

na làithean san Ruis

Mòran taing!

A bheil "leis an domhan-leud mu leth-cheud ceum 's a còig a thuath" ceart gu leòr?
