Club for young Manx speakers
THE Youth Service is exploring the possibility of having a youth club where young people can use the Manx language in a social context.
An open meeting has been arranged to which young people and their families are invited. It will be held on Wednesday 22 July at Peel Clothworkers’ School, starting at 7.15pm.
Mike Clague, Youth and Community Adviser for the Department of Education, has arranged the meeting in conjunction with the Manx Heritage Foundation’s Manx Language Officer, Adrian Cain, and others interested in the project. The Youth Service has an objective to promote awareness of Manx culture and heritage.
Mr Clague said: ‘We feel that there may be interest in a club which gives young people the chance to use Manx language on a regular basis while meeting socially and getting involved in positive activities outside of school. An increasing number of young people now learn Manx and this may be one way to encourage them to use it meaningfully in an informal setting.’
If there is sufficient interest, a club could open in November at Peel Youth Centre on Monday evenings, though other venues and times will be considered. Mr Clague said: ‘Anyone with an interest in discussing the project and sharing their ideas will be welcome – especially potential members. There are two possible age ranges for a Youth Service club, i.e. school years 6 to 10, or school years 9 and over (up to the age of 18). At this stage we are just exploring possible options. If anyone is interested but can’t attend the meeting, please leave a message at the Youth Office on 686057.’
