What is the culprit for this? I suggest that the SMO has to shoulder part of the blame. Yes, it's the SMO's fault. No, I'm not mad.

Seriously, think about it. Where do people with an interest in Gaelic development go? That's right, the SMO. And what degrees do they get?

So we have people qualified to teach Gaelic and... Media Studies. Soon we'll get Music too... if the Traditional Music degree covers enough of the classical theory required by the Department of Education's regulations, which is a very, very big if.

So there you have it. The SMO robs Peadar to pay Pòl.

I've met some young people with Gaelic who didn't want to go to Sabhal Mor because they were more intrested in doing a combined degree, Gaelic/Law, Gaelic/French etc but of course they then go to an english speaking environment. I suppose the resources have never really been there to expand the degree program through SMO or UHI (which still isn't a Uni anyway is it?)
Teaching is also not everyone's dream job, whatever the language.

I dont know if we can lay the blame at SMO's door on this one either to be honest - I just wonder how much interest people have in Gaelic medium teaching as a career in itself - as I have said before (and yes I knwo that things are improving) the problem is that at the end of the day it is so much harder teaching through Gaelic than in English - the resources still aren't there for the teachers to just 'grab' off the shelf as they are in mainstream.

if you had a choice to do a job ( a fairly difficult job too) in gaelic or english, what would you do?

as for the courses that SMO are running - well why not target an audience that contains a very high percentage of musicians anyway and with an expansion of the Gaelic media services, you'd be mad not to capitalise on that as well.

It's a tough one and definitely not one that is going to be solved over night - I reckon that Gaelic teachers should receive some cash incentives to get into teaching - either that or a better support structure to give them more time to organise resources and lessons.

It's not like it's an either/or situation. Is a trained GME teacher obliged to take a job in a Gaelic-medium school should it become available? I don't think so -- they'll apply for jobs like any other teacher but they'll have a (slightly) wider choice than the others.

Which also casts a strange light on the idea of "quotas" for places in GME at teacher training college. (Akerbeltz recently mentioned that he was turned down by Jordanhill as they'd already filled their quota of GME language teachers.) Any oversupply of trained GME teachers can be gainfully employed as English-medium teachers, gaining useful professional experience, until such time as GME roles become available.

OK, so there may be problems getting enough classes for teaching practice, but if the number of current Gaelic-medium classes is going to restrict the number of future Gaelic-medium teachers... well what hope is there?
