Are you serious? Aonghas Padraig Caimbeul, poet, novelist, columnist, film star... and you suggest he takes Gaelic for granted?!?

Ah yes, the old "we learners truly appreciate Gaelic. Those uncultured teuchters wouldn't understand their own culture even if they were born and brought up in it."

That's the sort of sentiment that really turns Gaels off speaking to learners.

Now stop for a minute and think about the experience of the Gael in all this. Put yourself in his shoes.

Imagine a world where learners English-language media was populated by (for example) Eastern Europeans with slightly Americanised accents. Imagine turning on the Scottish news to hear a news article about Rabbie Burns' Hoose delivered by someone who doesn't really understand the difference between "the" and "a". Or tuning into an Allan Shearer retrospective on Tyne Tees (or whoever has the regional ITV contract for the NE of England now) and hear it delivered by someone who keeps calling him Allán Shearúhr. Imagine hearing your grandson say "Allán Shearúhr ees best footballer een worruld".

That's the dark cloud hanging on the horizon, blowing westwards towards Skye. That's the nightmare that APC and many like him face.

It is not racist or discriminatory to want voices on the TV that match the settled native community, just as regional news programmes south of the border have presenters with local accents.

It is odd that it is only in Scotland that the idea of not wanting an English person as a correspondent on the local news is considered racist, and it's a shame that we've carried this hyper-sensitive political correctness over into the Gaelic media.
