Chan e naidheachd ùr a tha seo Art. Nochd e sa Chèitean. Mur a bheil fhios aig BnG dè a tha cur drag air luch-iomairt na Gàidhlig carson a tha sin?
Seo na sgrìobh mi air mo bhlog aig an àm ud:
Seo againn ceist annabarrach cudromach a chàirdean, nam bheachdsa ceist a tha fada nas cudromach na seiceachan gàidhlig (cha mhòr nach deach seiceachan às an rathad co-dhiù).
Gur math a thèid leis an strì a chuir am buidheann facebook air dòigh gus Gàidhlig faighinn air na h-innealan Markies. Leis a leithid innealan a tha seo tha sinn a’ toirt sùil air an am ri teachd. Seo na tha an t-ar-a-mach teicneolas a' toirt dhuinn. Chì sinn fada a bharrachd den leithid agus innealan eile a bhuaileas air a h-uile pàirt den bheatha àbhaisteach againn. Mura bheil àite don Ghàidhlig an luib an techneòlais ùr tha cunnart ann gun teid i a-mach a shealladh sa bheatha latheil san am ri teachd.
Bu choir do Art Cormaig còir a bhith bualadh air doras Markies cho luath ‘s ghabha
Seall air an deasbad a tha seo air a' bhuidheann facebook sa Chèitean:

Regarding the Marks & Spencer Situation - I received the following response:
Dear Mr MacCoinnich,
Thank you for your email.
I am afraid that these machines are only able to hold 6 languages on them. These same 6 languages are on all of our self service tills across the country. The decision was made that these where the most popular languages that would be used the most.
I will however ensure that your comments with regards to Gaelic being used are logged for the attention of our policies teams.
Kind Regards,
Mike Thompson

Pretty inadequate reply. Surely it cannot be difficult to program these machines? Hopefully with more communication/pressure we can get their polices changed.

Wel, rhaid cyfaddef nad ydw i ddim wedi cael ateb hyd yn hyn.
(Uill, feumaidh mi ràdh nach eil mi air freagairt fhaighinn fhad 's a-nis.)
Or, in other words, I do not particularly care for the title of this thread. There are some of us who frequent the Gaidhealtachd for whom (god, is that right?) a Welsh facility would be useful.

Sometimes a seemingly simple programming solution can cost a lot of money and maybe even impossible. It is new technology but how old is the M&S data base the machines communicate with?
Maybe the next time someone is in Marks and Spencers they could see if they name of the manufacturer is visible on these machines.
Then we could ask the makers just what are the capabilities of these machines, i.e. can you program a different mix of languages in different stores and just what is the limit of languages on individual machines?
With that information we would be in a better position to lobby right across the retail sector because we wil see more and more of these machines in the years to come and similar developments in other sectors - i.e. Sat nav becoming standard on all vehicles - how about a gaelic version?

I will check the machines tomorrow but I think there are only five languages on them right now. If there are six however we should demand that one is taken away and replaced with Gaelic. Will report back.

Dear ,
Thank you for your email. Unfortunately I am unsure of your query from your email and we do not have a tr*nsl*t*r for your language here. However if you would like to reply in English I will be happy to look into this for you.
Thank you again for contacting us. Kind regards,

Am bi sibh a' cur an tairgse seirbheis tron Ghàidhlig sna bùthtean agaibh? Tha mi air cluintinn gun cuiridh sibh sin tron Bheurla, tron Phoilis, tron Fhrangais is tron Chuimris. Dè mu dheidhinn a' Ghàidhlig?

Apologies John, no offence intended. Just feel a bit aggrieved that another language has supposedly pushed Gaelic off Mark's and Spencers 'Top six languages list in it's Highland stores.

A bheil duine sam bith ann a sheo a' fuirich ann am Baile Átha Cliath?
Mhothaich mi gu bheil Markies thall a sin. A bheil innealan seo aca agus dè na cànain orra?
Anyone here live in Dublin. I noticed they have a Markies there. Do they have these machines and what languages are on them?

The following site might be of interest. Had no reply to my e-mails, Marks and Spencers are not a polite company. Or is it because I am not English.

Here is the response I got:
Dear Mr Morris, Thank you for your email. I am afraid that our self service checkout machines only have a limitedspace for languages. the machines offer the same languages throughoutthe Uk. Unfortunately I am afraid that Scottish Gaelic is not a languagethat we plan to introduce. I am sorry to disappoint you with this. Simply not good enough. Looks like they might have to get some bad press out of this.

THAT frankly is a load of rot. I've worked on Epos systems and there's no reason why they couldn't install an extra language pack. The amount of data needed would be pretty small.
"Unfortunately I am afraid that Scottish Gaelic is not a language that we plan to introduce."
I think we need to ask...... "and why not?"
