Halò is mise Semune!

Unread post by Semune »

Hi all! A big thanks to Graisg and Iain Donnchaidh for showing me this forum. I just started a little blog called Daily Gaelic where I am going to write a little each day to teach myself (and whoever else ventures over there) scottish gaelic from the ground up.

Slàinte!

Woa!!!!!!!!!!!

You're leaping way ahead in the grammar! 8-)

Unfortunately 'tha mi + noun' doesn't work in Gaelic.

Tha mi nam leughadair (I'm in my reader, i.e. in that state)

OR

'S e leughadair a th' annam (it's a reader that's in me)

OR (keep it simple!)

Tha mi a' leughadh a-nis - I'm reading now.

Tha mi an dòchas gum bi mi a' sgrìobhadh a dh'aithgheàrr - I hope that I will be writing soon.

(And you are! :priob: )

Tapadh leat! I have to admit learning a new language, for me, is pretty difficult as I never really paid much attention to the linguistics of how English (or any other language) work... so all this "Infinitive" "tense" stuff is a bit confusing for me. But after reading through a lot of the "Write stuff in Gaelic/Write stuff in English" forum on these boards it is starting to make much more sense!

I'm not sure that it matters.

Seems like a lot of grammar rules don't carry over to Gàidhlig.

Better perhaps to just learn the usage :?

I does help though if you know some concepts, so you know wich terms to look for in your grammar book when you want to find an explanation for what you need ;)

Tense basically works like this:

I go
I went
I have gone
I will go
...

Of course, Gaelic use of tenses is different from English use of tenses, but it still does help to sort out stuff in your head if you have a basic idea of what tense is :D

Tense is what happens when I drink too much coffee. :priob:

Or what I sleep in when I go camping :D

Dè mu dheidhinn (I go/I went/I have gone/I will go):-

I go ---------- I go not ---------- Go I? ---------- Go not I?
I went ------- I went not -------- Went I? ------- Went not I?
I have gone - I have not gone - Have I gone? - Have not I gone?
I will go ------ I will not go ----- Will I go? ------ Will not I go?

Cuideachd, "I am going", "I was going", "I will have gone", "I had gone", "were I to go", "were I to have gone", "were I to be going"...

Ach chan eil rudan mar "I go not", "Go I?", "I went not", "Went I?" air an cluinntinn glè thric sa Bheurla. Bidh an gnìomhair "do/did" feumail an siud, m.e. "I did not go", "Do I go?" amsaa. Smathaid gur e bastard chainnt airson a h-ionnsachadh a th' anns a' Bheurla!

Co-dhiù, am measg a h-uile "go" a-nuas, cò aca a tha "infinitive"? Am feum "to"? Agus cò dha am b' urrainn Beurla a chleachdadh gu nàdarra nam biodh iad a' smaoineachadh air rudan mar "infinitive" tron àm?

Seadh, 's ann feumail a tha a bhith eòlach air na tràith, ach chan ann mar sin a-mhàin a thig fileantachd.

"Ciamar a tha thu?"

"...[oh, let's see now, Present Tense of 'to be', so 'yes' is 'tha' and 'no' is 'chan eil' - oh, it's not that sort of question....'ciamar' - ah - that's 'how', innit? 'How are you?'. So how do I say how I am? Like, 'I'm OK' in Gaelic...oh dear, the questioner's given up and gone somewhere else]..."

"Ciamar a tha thu fhèin?" - [O, cawn ni weld, "Sut rwyt ti dy hun?": byddaf yn ateb fel "Rwi'n go lew" te rywbe fel'na] Tha gu math. [Rwanta, rhaid wrth fod yn ddof, rhywbe fel "A thithau?"] 'S thu fhèin?

Nuair a bha mi òg, bhithinn a' smaontinn gum feum a bhith cho doirbh a bhith na Fhraingeach, le cleachdadh faclair tron àm airson bruidhinn ris na Fraingich eile san Fhraingis...o, dyddiau fy mabinogi! {làithean m' òige)

Och aye - fàilte Shemune - Welcome Semune.
