CalMerc: Useful Gaelic words (and Scots too)

Unread post by Níall Beag »

The Caledonian Mercury has been running a series of articles on useful Scots words and Murchadh Mac Leòid, their semi-regular Gaelic writer, has started a similar series of useful Gaelic words.

The Gaelic one is aimed at beginners, so it's in English. He's gone down the route of using a pseudo-phonetic transcription that doesn't really aid clarity (try to guess how you would pronounce "beyinn" before visiting and checking out what it's his transcription of!) but hey-ho....

I've read the CalMerc article before this post, but I think I'd guess it - OTOH if I had no Gaelic I'd probably deduce [be?n] from beinn, but [be??n]from beyinn...
