Is it possible to edit old posts?

When I post something on the forum an edit icon usually appear at the top. However, on older posts it isn't there, why is this?

The software is set so that you can only edit your postst within a given time frame - I think it's currently 1 or 2 days.

For really old posts, you need to first ensure your quill is clear of ink, then use it to scratch out the item to be edited, then smooth over the vellum, then re-load your quill with ink and make the desired amendment.

Alas Seonaidh, I tried this. I even went back to some of my oldest posts and tried to edit them with a chisel and hammer to no avail! ;)

Liquid paper is the modern way folks, but after a while you can't see anything else on the screen.
