Study reveals Gaelic student shortfall

Up to 860 people would have to become bilingual in Gaelic each year if the decline of the language was to be halted, according to a study.

A Royal Society journal published the research which found the language was in danger of becoming extinct.

However the authors said it could be saved by copying initiatives which had succeeded in revitalising Welsh. ............

The Scottish government invested £2.15m in its Gaelic Schools Fund last year

They talk about a shortfall, but don't bother to mention what it is. Hardly a small oversight.

Harrr... That's roughly the amount that the Basque Regional Gov't invested in its project Lanhitz last year (to increase the use of Basque in the workplace). They spent €1.3m on promoting Basque in society, €5.7m on promoting Basque in the media (that doesn't include EITBs budget), €1.6m on Basque and new technologies and €2.5m on supporting the use of Basque in the private sector. How many learners become fluent each year? 20 ? 50? 100? more than that?

It's not the total sum but in 08/09 there were 38.957 adults in HABE run adult courses (in about 100 centres, some 1,500 teachers). Of these 16,157 registered for a course leading to one of the 4 certificates of fluency (as in, they all certify fluency but at different levels from "fluent to work in to fluent to teach in" (paraphrasing)). Of these 7055 passed the exam. Which indicentally means that the certificate you get is actually work something, the tests are hard to harsh.

The other students study at various levels from night classes to the intensive 5 days a week for a month immersion models (levels 1-12). I can't put my hand of the figure of adults reaching fluency each year but I'd say that between 8,000-12,000 is a safe estimate.

Thathar gu bheil siud suidheachadh math air sgaths gu bheil Gàidhlig "open to everyone" mar sin. Bollags. The biggest problem I had with learning Gaelic has always been the ease with which I can fall back on English whenever I run out of words of even if I'm just in a bit of a rush... like now.

Ceòlas really irritates me at times because of the "English habit" many of the staff and helpers get into. They're being friendly, they're being open, but it's not good for the Gaelic.
