You don't need to actually download one - you can consult this amazing one free online:
http://faclair.com/
If you do sometimes need an actual book dictionary, I recommend this paperback one - both directions, cheap, very up-to-date, surprisingly comprehensive, some useful grammar and lists in the back.

(It's in the Teach Yourself series but is a much better item than the now dated Teach Yourself Gaelic coursebook.)

I find this downloadable, searchable dictionary very useful. It sits open on the screen when I'm reading or writing. It's a lot quicker than looking something up on line.

It contains both the old MacFarlane and MacBain dictionaries so it's a bit old fashioned, particularly regarding spelling. It uses an MS Access database so you can modify or add to it easily.

In addition to Faoileag's and Alasdair's tips I have also good experience with Roy Wentworth's dictionary downloadable as a .doc file here:
http://www.smo.uhi.ac.uk/gaidhlig/wentw ... tomhasach/
If you convert it into an .odt file you get from 4.8 to 1.3MB.
