How would I say, 'father before him'? As in 'he is a writer like his father, and his father before him'.

You might like to use the following construction

Bha e na sgrìobhadair mar a bha athair roimhe, agus athair-sa roimhe-san, which constructs it using the emphatic endings for the noun (athair) and the prepositional pronoun (roimhe - before him), in relation to the further away relationship.

That's certainly how I would do it, and it does to my mind get the sense of it.

I'd go along with that - catches it well for me. :D

Note the contrstruction (referred to in various other threads about how to express jobs and professions) -

Tha mi nam sgrìobhadair

- I am a writer (possibly among other things, or at the moment, but that is currently the role I wish to talk about).

c.f. 'S e sgrìobadair a th' annam
- I'm a writer and that's that.
(It's a writer that's in me . No room inside me for anything else.)
