SIR, - The new "multimillion-pound Gaelic village" development at Kilbeg, in south Skye, will be about as "Gaelic" as its incongruous village green (the Press and Journal, September 7).
Perhaps it is true that the Gaelic College, said to be behind the plans, has boosted population at Sleat, but the college is in reality a largely English-speaking environment, and has, on the whole, alienated the remaining native Skye Gaelic speakers in the area.
This is just another example of developers using a Gaelic façade to give their folie de grandeur spurious credibility.
In August 2010, the chief planner told me: "Gaelic was never part of our remit."
