1. I am from .... (name of place)
Tha mi a Malaig. à (à with accent = from, a without accent = to, so very mportant difference!)

2. I am living in (place). It's in.... (country / state etc)
Tha mi a fuireach anns an Cill Rimhann. Tha i anns an Fiobha. ... a' fuireach ann an Cill Rìmhinn. Tha e ann am Fìobha.

4. That's interesting. Is it near the sea? - Yes /No.
Tha sin inntinneach. A bheil i faisg a muir? a bheil e faisg air a' mhuir
(Whats the difference between inntinneach and ùidheachail/ùidheil? (I assum uidheil is an adjective, e.g thats an interesting object?))
I think ùidheil is more traditional; inntinn=mind, not interest, and inntinneach in Dwelly means wise, intelligent etc, not interesting, so I suspect inntinneach has probably become more popular because it looks/sounds closer to 'interesting'.

Tha. Tha Malaig air a chladach(?) air a' chladach = on the shore. Do you mean on the coast? Air a' chosta

5. I'm learning Gaelic, but sometimes it's difficult.
Tha mi ag ionnsachadh Gaidhlig, ach tha i air uairibh cruaidh. .....Gàidhlig.....doirbh air uairibh / uaireannan (more common)

6. I was in (place) in the summer.
chaidh mi gu Florida anns an Samhradh. anns an t-samhradh/ as t-samradh

7. It was very big / pretty / small / cold / hot etc.
was = bha
glè lenites the next word

Tha i gle mor. glè mhòr
Tha i gle breagha glè bhrèagha
Tha i gle bheag
Tha i gle fhuar
Tha i gle theth

8. Where were you in the summer?
Caite anns an Samhradh bheil thu? Càit' an robh thu as t-samhradh?

9. I like (ice-cream / coffee etc)
Is toil leum ti.

10. I don't like .....
Cha toil leum cofaidh.

11. Do you like....? - Yes / No.
An toil leat ti?
Is Toil.

12. I have a car (bike etc). Do you have a car (etc)? - Yes / No.
Tha car agam. A bheil car agad? càr (car without accent = a turn, a trick)

13. My car is red(etc). It was cheap / expensive.
Tha mo car ruadh. Tha i saor buileach(?) ruadh = rust red, chestnut; normal 'car red'' = dearg
saor / daor

:moladh:

PLEASE get used to putting in accents right from the beginning. You will never learn them if you put it off till 'later'.
They are very important in Gaelic, both in writing and in speaking (they generally mark long / stressed syllables, i.e. pronunciation, which affects the meaning of a word). As in French, they are NOT an optional / decorative extra. They are an integral part of the spelling.

EowynAnduin wrote:16. The dog's tail is very long.

Unfortunately coin-fheur is the name of a plant (called dogtail in Eng.) - feur means grass. The dangers (and joys) of Am Faclair Beag! :spors:
tail = earball
long= fada (àrd = tall)
cù = dog (genitive form - coin)
> Tha earball a' choin glè fhada.

17. My parents have two cats and three goldfishes. The cats are big and lazy.
Mo phàrantan aca dha chat agus trì òr-iasg. Tha sibh cat mòr agus leisg. (plural of cats got me - cat > cait)

Tha dà chat agus trì òr-èisg aig mo pharantan. Tha na cait mòr agus leisg.

Most dictionaries (on or offline) give you the main form of a noun ('nominative'), the genitive (the 'of' form), and the plural.
e.g.
cat, cait, cait. (cat, of a cat, cats)
òr-iasg, òr-èisg, òr-èisg
cù, coin, coin

- you can see a very common pattern there.

Often however, you just ad '-an' or '-ean' to the noun to get the plural
pàrant > pàrantan
taigh > taighean
nighean > nigheanan (girl, girls)

18. Do you have a pet? - Yes / No
A bheil peata agad/agaibh? Tha / Chan eil Ceart! :D

19. Aren't pets nice? - Yes, usually.
Nach eil peataen snog? Tha, am bitheantas. (peata > peataichean, but otherwise, ceart!)

20. Now I have a sore
Tha mi ceann goirt a-nis. (mi > mo)

Deagh oidhirp! Cum ort! Good try! Keep it up! :D
