Dà cheist

Tha dà cheist agamsa.

Ciamar a chanas mi "How many Gaels do you know" anns a' Ghàidhlig? mheud Gàidheal...?

Agus chunnaic mi an gnàth seo, ach cha urrain dhomh cuimhneachad an ceart abairt. Bha sin mar: "tha mi toilichte coinneachad ribh" no rud mar sin. A bheil sin a' ciallachadh "nice to meet you"?

Tapadh leibh!

dà cheistean > dà cheist, by the way
How many Gaels do you know
Cò mheud Gàidheal a tha thu eòlach orra?

Code: Select all

tha mi toilichte coinneachad reibh
tha mi toilichte coinneachadh ribh but yes, it means nice to meet you

Am faod an roimhear a dhol roimhe "cò mheud"? Tha mi a' ciallachadh, am biodh "Air cò mheud Gàidheal a tha thu eòlach?" ceart cuideachd?

-Cò mheud Gàidheal a tha thu eòlach orra? (no cò mheud Gàidheal a tha thu eòlach?) agus -Tha mi toilichte coinneachad ribh, ma-thà.

Mòran taing!

Does the 's construction work here, ie "Cò mheud G1aidheal 's tusa eòlach orra?"...?

Cò mheud Gaidheal 's tusa eòlach orra?
Well, yes and no. It's grammatical I guess but it suggests something else. It's not just a neutral question anymore (meaning that 's mise eòlach ort is not a grammatical sentence by itself, so the 's cannot be the copula, it must the the logical linking agus).

I would interpret this as a somewhat unidiomatic way of saying uiread a Ghàidheil 's tusa eòlach orra i.e. 'look, so many Gaels and you know them all'.

The differences between those are down to dialect (sorry, no pins for cia meud yet and cia mheud isn't that clear as a pattern yet but AFAIKT it's mostly southern)
co mheud
co meud
cia mheud

Cha chreid mi gum faod thu dad a chur ro fhaclan ceiste idir.

Air cò mheud Gàidheal a tha thu eòlach
Chan eil, mar a thuirt GunChleoc. Well, chan ann an deagh Ghàidhlig. Cò aig a tha brath air nas urrainn dhut dèanamh ann an droch Ghàidhlig :D
