Avicii vs Lurgan

Unread post by CaoimhinSF »

Apologies that this one is in Irish (I won't make a habit of it), but I though Gaelic speakers might get a kick out of it, especially young people. It has gone viral online (over 2,000,000 hits), especially in Ireland, and is spurring interest in Irish among young people, so young people in Scotland might take some inspiration from it, and the idea of these cover songs which are becoming very trendy in Ireland (if you check out the YouTube video, you'll get links to many other songs done at the same college, Coláiste Lurgan in Galway). I don't know whether they do things like this at SMO, but it would be a good idea. The English-language original by Avicii ( a Swedish singer) had over 55,0000,000 hits the last time I looked, and is being treated as something like this year's "anthem" for young people, having hit number 1 in a number of countries around the world. Frankly, I think the Irish version is better than the English original.

Here's the YouTube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1A6__HssHW8

and here are the lyrics (there's a lot of abbreviation -- poetic license -- in the song, and some dialectical variations on words, so it can be hard to figure out without a program:

Fáinne fí i gcoim na hoíche.
(Níl) 'tada riamh nach mbíonn thart.
Diabhail fhios a'm cá bhfuil deireadh mo scéil,
ach táim ar an mbealach ceart.

Deir siad liom gan a dhul sa tseans,
nach dtagann ciall roimh aois.
Bhuel, 'sé m'aistear é, ní léir cén fhad a mhairfidh sé,
'sé togha ar aon chaoi.

Cúrfá [2x]:

So lig mé saor ón suan 'tá orm.
(tai)speáin 'om bóthar éasca cothrom.
Bainfidh mé ceann scríbe amach, sí m'aidhm,
cíbe treo átá i ndán.

(Tá) mé ag iompar úalach mór an tsaoil,
ach níl a'm ach péire lámh,
suile troma is an ghrian a dhul faoi,
ach ní chodlaíonn mé go sámh.

"Bris amach agus tú fós sach óg.”
Chinnigh mé le dhul in aghaidh.
Seo mo ré, seasfaidh mé an fód,
's leanfaidh mé ar aghaidh.

Cúrfá [2x]

Cíbe treo átá i ndán,
cíbe treo átá i ndán,
cíbe treo átá i ndán,
cíbe treo, cíbe treo, cíbe treo.

Vicious circle in the middle of the night,
There’s never anything without an end.
I haven't a clue [Devil if I know] where the end of my story will be,
but I’m on the right road.

They told me not to take a chance,
that wisdom doesn’t come before age.
Well, it’s my journey, who knows how long it will last,
it’s brilliant* anyway.
[*for us North Americans, read "great" for "brilliant"]

Chorus [2x]:
So free me from the slumber I’m in,
show me a fast, level road.
I’ll make something out of it, that’s my intention,
whatever direction it takes [is destined/fated].

I’m carrying the great weight of the world,
but I only have two hands,
heavy eyes and the sun going down,
but I don’t sleep peacefully.

“Break out while you’re still healthy and young.”
I determined to move forward.
This is my time, I’ll stand my ground,
and I’ll move forward.

Chorus [2x]

Whatever direction it takes,
whatever direction it takes,
whatever direction it takes,
whatever direction, whatever direction,
whatever direction.

Ma tha mo chuid Gàidhlig nas fheàrr, bhiodh mise fhèin a feuchainn, ach chan eil e, gu mì-fhòrtanach. Ma tha sibh eòlach air "Struileag", chruthaich iad ceòl a bha.. uill, nach robh seann-nòs.
Bhiodh gaol agam oirbh gu bràth, ma cheartaicheadh sibh na mearachdan sa' phost os cionn!
Sgeul aigeantach mòr ri linn,
Gu'm bi neart, agus ceart, mar ri treòir,
Do'n fhear sheasas còir an rìgh.
