An earran A
- Thàinig Dortmunder tarsainn air mullaichean bhon a’ gharaids aig a’ chrois-rathaid. Bha aodach dubh air agus baga chanabhais de dh’innealan spùinne leis.
- Ràinig e an siathamh mullach agus sheall e sìos bhon a’ mhullach chun na h-aghaidh-thogalaich gus am feuch an e an t-àite ceart a tha ann gu dearbh. Bha e tuainealach mionaid no dhà a’ faicinn na sràide fada shìos, sia ùrlaran bhuaithe, a' snàmh mar long ann an dearrsadh de sholas-sràide.
- Bha càraichean air gach taobh dhith, a fàgail an rathaid chaol dhubh mu a meadhan.
- Chaidh tacsaidh an-siud agus bha an t-uachdar buidhe aige a’ boillsgeadh san t-solais. Lean càr poileis e gu slaodach; bha an tùr-rabhaidh air a’ mhullach aige coltach ris a’ mhaide-milis.
- Agus ’s e an t-àite ceart a bha ann. Chunnaic e shìos clàr-bùtha an sginneir, dìreach far am bu chòir dha a bhith.
- Chlaoin Dortmunder, car tuainealach fhathast, air ais bhon oir den mhullach, thionndaidh e gu faiceallach agus chaidh e gus an dàrna taobh a’ mhullaich, far an robh staighre theine a chaidh gu dorchadas nach robh cho tuainealach.
- Bha na ballachan air cùlaibh nan togalach cho faisg ri chèile is a bha e coltach le Dortmunder gum b’ urrainn dha ruigsinn agus làmh a chur air a’ bhalla bhrice shalach mu chomhair, ach bha a h-uile uinneag dorcha.
- Bha trì uairean sa mhadainn, mar sin nach robh duine dùisgte ann.
- Dortmunder, wearing black and carrying his canvas bag of burglar tools, walked across the rooftops from the parking garage on the corner.
- At the sixth roof, he looked over the front edge to be absolutely sure he was on the right building, and felt dizzy for just a second when he saw the distant street six stories down, floating like a ship in the glare of streetlights.
- Cars were parked along both sides, leaving one black lane open in the middle.
- A cab was going by down there, its yellow top glinting in the light. Behind the cab came a slow-moving police car; the unlit flasher dome on its roof looked like a piece of candy.
And this was the right place. The furrier’s hanging sign was visible down there, right where it was supposed to be. - Dortmunder, feeling a trifle queasy about the height, leaned back from the edge, carefully turned, and walked across the roof to the opposite side, where a fire escape led down into less dizzying darkness.
- The building backs were crammed so close together here that Dortmunder felt he could almost reach out and touch the grimy brick wall across the way, but all of the windows along here were dark.
- It was three o’clock in the morning, so no one was up and about.
