Comhairle mas e do thoil e

Unread post by Neilr65 »

Gàidhlig
Hàlo,
I am after some advice on a really basic sentence from " Scottish Gaelic in twelve weeks" and have managed to get myself
confused. I am also using Duolingo.

The sentence "They are cold"

I thought the answer would be "Tha fuar iad" - but the answer is "Tha iad fuar". Yet in the question "I want a drink" the answer is
"Tha deoch agam".

Is there something I have not fully understood in sentence construction.

Any help gratefully appreciated

Tapadh leibh

There is no verb "to have" in Gaelic. If you have something it is "at you". "Tha deoch agam" : Tha=is; deoch=a drink; agam=at me.

If you give it away, it will no longer be at you.

Tapadh leibh Niall Beag,
I knew "tha deoch agam" was correct, I was after
clarification on whether
"Tha fuar iad" was correct or if it should be "Tha iad fuar"

Iomadh taing

"Tha iad fuar" is correct.

The order here is the same as with "tha deoch agam", once you account for the fact that "agam" doesn't mean "I":

"Tha iad fuar" = they are cold.
"Tha deoch agam" = A drink is at me.

Yep. "Tha fuar iad" is wrong, never use that.
