A’ Bhearradh Dhearg

Unread post by Fearchar »

Hi,

I'm writing a book about a climbing area in Glen Clova in the Southern Cairngorms which is called on the OS map 'Red Craig'.

The Red Craig constitutes more than one cliff so could be, in English: 'The Red Cliff' or 'The Red Cliffs'.

I want to give the book the correct Gaelic name so I would appreciate some advice about what would be the most correct name.

At the moment I have A’Bhearradh Dhearg as the working name. Is that correct?

Thanks, Grant

Where did you source that name from? I don't know what the Gaelic name for that place is, so we can only judge by the quality of your source.

Well, right next to it I see "Carn Derg" so in all probability, it would be "A' Chreag Dhearg"

Yep Carn Dearg is the name of the hill that the cliffs are an outcrop on. A' Chreag Dhearg sounds better I'll use that thanks.

I'm assuming the book isn't in Gaelic. As such, us inventing a new name for it or attempting to guess at older Gaelic names can't do any good, and could make it harder in future to discover a true Gaelic name.
