give us a nudge

Unread post by semaphore »

I've been having difficulty talking about "bumping into", "knocking into" even "hitting into". I can talk around it and that does for the most part, but still feels a bit too indirect.

Bhuail e san doras -- He hit into the door.
Bhuail e sa chàr aige -- He hit his car.
Thuit e is bhuail e a cheann san làr -- He fell down and hit his head.
Leig e às an copan is bhuail e nam chas -- He dropped the cup on my foot.
Dè an rud san do bhuail e? -- What did he hit?

There's an aspect of "gu cearbach" missing from these examples to me. Someone bumping their shoulder accidentally into an object. These are more naturally expressed in Scots English idiomatically

"He just melted me iver the napper wae that"
"I just cracked my shoodder aff the door"
"It went into the wall"
"He ran his heed richt into it"

Even a gentle knock or bump

"I've spilled some coffee because I bumped into the cup".

I can't seem to recall any way to express this distinction. Does anyone have any different vocabularly or ideas on how this should be expressed?

Tapadh leibh 'son ur oidhirp, 's e sin an oidhirp a rinn mi fhìn sa chiad àite gun bhuannachd dhomh. Mar an ceudna tha na toraidhean aig Google gu beag feum. Rud a fhuair mi fìor àraid 's e nach eil guth mar is còir air a leithid ann am faclair sam bith a tha leam nam sgeilp. :(

Cha mholainn gun cleachd thu Google airson a leithid. Bhiodh Google Fight feumail uair ach on àm a chuir iad a' Ghàidhlig air Google tr*nsl*t*, chan eil e cho feumail 's a b' àbhaist.

An do dh'fheuch thu DASG idir?

Agus beagan ceartachaidh dhut: ur n-oidhirp

Tapadh leibh 'son mo cheartachadh.

Cha b' e Google tr*nsl*t* idir air an robh mi a-mach ach an "logair" aige 'son a bhith a' cruinneachadh nan toiraidhean is mi a' sireadh phàtrain annta.

Cha do dh'fheuch fhathast, ach cuiridh mi rud sam bith buntainneach ris an t-snàth sa.

Tha guth air "buail air" ann an "Gaelic Gold" a' ciallachadh "Bump into" ach a-rèir mo thuigse 's e gnìomh a nithear le neart a th' ann am buail. Ach sin a' mhì-chinnt nach i. Tha iomadh rud ann a thaobh "tap" neo a bhith a' beantainn rudan a chèile le beag neart. 'S iad Gnogag 's Sgailceag 's Stail 's Snag. Tha "buille" nam measg ann ach a-rithist le neart. M.e.

Thug thu buille dhan chopan agam a dh'aona ghnothaich!
's mi nach tug, cha b' e ach gnogag thuiteamach a bh' ann!
Bhoil, e leagte nist.

Am feadh 's a dh' fhaodadh seo bhith "ceart" chan eil fhios a'm eadar 's gu bheil a' bhrìgh cheart aice sa robh dùil agam ris sa chiad dol a-mach gus nach eil. Ged a dh'fhaodas abairtean nas fheàrr a bhith ann 's dòcha gun cleachdar "mo leisgeulan airson a bhith a' bualadh air a' chopan agaibh" ceart gu leòr 'son a' Ghàidhlig a chur air "bumping into" a dh'aona bhuil.

'S e, tha mi fhìn dualtach a bhith ag ràdh "bhuail e nam cheann" ach 's aithne dhomh an abairt is a ciall.

Dà rud

air a togail bho https://learngaelic.scot/look/index.jsp?b=BM26
"Ma bhuaileas tu ann an duine, can, "Gabh mo leisgeul," no, "Gabhaibh mo leisgeul," no, "Tha mi duilich." Na can, "Gluais.""

air a togail bho https://learngaelic.scot/litir/index.jsp?l=1033
"Bhuail e an doras: he knocked the door. The verb buail, a’ bualadh ‘strike, hit, knock’ in modern usage can often command a noun directly eg bhuail e an uinneag ‘he knocked the window’. But it can also be used with prepositions eg buail ann ‘collide with, bump into’. I’ve stuck to modern usage, but when the story was collected in the 19th Century, the storyteller (or collector) used the structure a’ bualadh anns an doras."

An dòchas gun cuidich seo le cudeigin latha geal
