Please find below the information on Gaelic courses and workshops offered by Sgoil Ghàidhlig an Àrd-Bhaile, the Gaelic Language Society of Halifax, beginning this September.

Beginner/ Intermediate

Wednesday evenings, 6pm to 9pm

Suited for the absolute beginner, as well as learners with some experience with the language, the Beginner/Intermediate course is currently taught on Wednesday evenings from 6pm to 9pm by Laura Stirling in her home,11B Dakin Drive, Bedford. This course is designed for those who are beginning to learn Gaelic or who already have some competence in the language. The focus will be on learning to speak and understand basic conversational Gaelic through a relaxed, communicative approach that utilizes props, activities, stories and games. Classes are conducted completely in Gaelic. Participants are encouraged to use a personal recording device to record classes for review at home or to visit our website to download class recordings.

Intermediate/Advanced


Monday evenings, 6pm to 9pm

Designed to engage learners with a variety of competency levels, the Intermediate/ Advanced course currently takes place on Monday evenings from 6pm to 9pm with Joe Murphy. The focus will be on learning to speak and understand more complex, idiomatic Gaelic through a relaxed, communicative approach that utilizes props, activities, stories and games. Classes are conducted completely in Gaelic. Participants are encouraged to use a personal recording device to record classes for review at home or to visit our website to download class recordings. In order to facilitate a comfortable and conducive learning environment, classes will be held in the homes of Sgoil Ghàidhlig members on a rotational basis. If you would be interested in offering your home for a class, please contact us. No obligation. The first class will be held at the home of Tim Aggett at 2 Graham Street, Dartmouth.

Advanced Reading & Writing in Gaelic


Tuesday evenings, 7pm to 9pm

Open to learners with significant skill already acquired in the language or those who are already conversational in Gaelic, the Advanced Reading & Writing course is conducted entirely through the medium of Gaelic. The goal is learning to read and write and discuss written Gaelic through a relaxed, communicative approach that utilizes stories, poetry and informative texts as well as audio and visual materials. Participants are encouraged to use a personal recording device to record classes for review at home or to visit our website to download class recordings. Thoughout this course comprehension, rhythm and speed of speech, accent--"blas," pronounciation will comprise the focus of the course. Materials used will reflect a Gaelic world-view, incorportating a strong cultural element in the course. As well, a strong conversational element will be provided to the class, which will help to continue to strengthen the listening and speaking skills of participants. Instructor Joe Murphy teaches the course on Tuesday nights from 7pm to 9pm. These classes will be held at 2 Graham Street, Dartmouth.

Saturday Workshops

Two Saturdays each month, 9am to 4pm

Open to learners at all levels, Saturday classes are taught from 9am to 4pm, with a lunch break for all participants. Course fees includes class fees and strùpagan (tea breaks). Please bring your sack lunch with you to share a meal together in Gaelic conversation. Locations and instructors vary for Saturday classes. Please contact Sgoil Ghàidhlig for more information regarding the Saturday workshops, or join our email list to get regular updates on Saturday workshop times and locations.

$25 per class
