Rosetta Stone: Gàidhlig

Fhuair mi an post-d seo bhon cholaiste an-diugh:
Hello fellow lovers of Gaelic!
Earlier today I spoke with a representative from Rosetta Stone.
I asked them why they did not have a programme for learning
Gàidhlig. They said, "Well, you must email us if you want Scottish Gaelic.
If we get enough emails from fellow enthusiasts, we will definitely produce
such a programme."
So, with that being said, I think it would be wise--and an aide to the survival of Gàidhlig--if you posted this information on your websites and sent the information to other Scottish Gaelic websites you know of.
Email:
languagerequests@rosettastone.com
In the email, include why you think they should produce software for the language.
For the survival of a beautifully rich language,
.........
Mar seo, cuiridh mi post-d gu Rosetta Stone mu dheidhinn sin. De mu do dheidhinn sa?

Math fhèin, Alasdair. Nuair a thoiseach mi Gàidhlig ag ionnsachadh, lorg mi a' thoinndadh Ghàidhlig à Rosetta Stone ach chan eil aonar ann, gu mì-fhortanach. Bidh mi a' sgrìobhadh ruitha on tha mi a' smaoineachadh gum bhiodh seo rud math airson Gàidhlig.

Tha tip agus ulpan againn agus dòighean tradiseanta againn, a bheil feum air siostam eile? Dè a tha co sonraichte leis an Rosetta?

Deagh phuing ach saoilidh mi nach dèanadh iad e mur a robh iad cinnteach gum biodh iad a' togail airgid às - agus a bharrachd air sin a' lorg taic-airgid bho bhòrd na Gàidhlig mar sin air adhart gus a bhith cinnteach gum biodh prothaid ann dhaibh.

Before you go asking for a Gaelic version, I suggest you try out the thing yourself.
You can try a demo on-line:
http://www.rosettastone.co.uk/personal/ ... -demo-form
or you can order a demo CD-ROM:
http://www.rosettastone.co.uk/personal/ ... -demo-form
I could write an essay on why I don't like it, but you may as well check it out yourselves.

Uill, tha mi a' smaoineachadh gun robh e actually glè mhath. 'S e lanaguage immersion a th' ann agus dh'obair e dhomh...
Tha mi a' smaoineachadh gum bi e math airson a' Ghàidhlig air sgàth 's gu bheil a' Ghàidhlig glè dhoirbh a ràdh mar is àbhaist agus 's e Rosetta Stone cursa ag èisteachd a th' ann.
Ged, tha e anabarrach doar - £340! Ach, tha sin cho daor ri cùrsa fada ceart co-dhiù so...

companies like rosetta stone should not be supported. their products are hideously expensive for what they are, and that isn't something to be promoted.
there is a website,
http://www.livemocha.com, with basically the same stuff (i prefer it, because it integrates language tandems in with the program), and it is ALL free.
and also - icelandic? instant win.
a gaelic pimsluer course would be brilliant, but i say that as somebody who's only ever illegally downloaded their stuff.

ceartachadh agus freagairt:
"doirbh ri bruidhinn" "cùrsa èisteachd"
Uill, tha bruidhinn 's èisteachd nan rudan eadar-dhealaichte.
Just listening doesn't teach you to pronounce. (Unless your under 8.)
Rosetta Stone has a history of "template teaching" -- just producing one course then tr*nsl*t*ng the phrases used into others. Any unusual structures in a language are not well covered.[*] Apparently they're getting better, but I don't think they'd go to a hell of a lot of effort in Gaelic.
[*] Phrase books used to have this problem -- eg Welsh and Gaelic phrasebooks would have an entry for "yes" and "no", simply because it was in the template and the writer was a muppet with a dictionary and a grammar. The computer-based "courses" (hah! that'll be right!) from Linguashop and Eurotalk tend to do the same sort of thing.
The moral of the story is that computer learning programs tend to be reasonably good for learning Spanish, Italian and French (and sometimes German), but there's better stuff available in those languages. They're crap for any other language, but they've got less competition. It's all a bit rubbish. Language learners are being robbed from all sides.
Grr. Snarl.

Tha mise làidir den bheachd gum bu chòir CD's ri fhaighinn saor an asghaidh do luchd-ionsachaidh na Gàidhlig gus piseach a thoirt air cùisean. (ulpan, tip, SPOL, tha mise coma - dìreach a h-uile abairt a dhith air daoine gus comhradh a chumail a dhol) Leis an staing creidis chan eil airgid gu leor aig mòran dhaoine gus a bhith phaigheadh a leithd còsg a tha aig classaichean Ulpan msaa.
CD saor an asghaidh leis a h-uile leth-bhreac den Caithness Courier mar ' marketing trial' lol

tl, chuir mi gu ceart e.
Uill, bha mi airson sùil a' toirt air demo Rosetta Stone ach bha iad ag iarraidh m' ainm is seòladh post-d. Tha mi duilich, ach chan fhaigh iad fiosrachadh mu mo dheidhinn is gheibh mi spam gu leòr mu thràth. Is chan eil mi airson breugan innte.
