'By VIVIENNE NICOLL A NEW unit has been opened in Glasgow to cope with the growing number of nursery pupils learning Gaelic.
Lyoncross Nursery School in Pollok can take 20 youngsters aged between three and five years old, bringing the total number of Gaelic nursery places in the city to 120.
Glasgow is home to more than 10% of Scotland's Gaelic speakers - the largest concentration outside the Western Isles.
At the 2001 census, the number of people in the city who understood, spoke, read or wrote the language was more than 10,000.
advertisementGordon Matheson, the city council's education spokesman, said: "Gaelic education is a great success story for our city and we felt it was important to set up an extra nursery to support parents who want their children to learn Gaelic.'
