First Minister Alex Salmond has rejected a suggestion that the SNP is fighting a losing battle to boost the popularity of Gaelic.

He spoke out in defence of a decision to launch a new Gaelic social networking site, similar to Bebo and Facebook, despite evidence that wider public interest in the language is waning.

New figures show the BBC’s new £21million Gaelic television channel has lost a third of its audience since it was launched in November.
