'A SHORTAGE of Gaelic teachers is causing a "major crisis" within Lochaber schools, according to a senior councillor.
Michael Foxley, leader of Highland Council's administration, is calling for urgent action to address the shortage which is hitting secondary and primary schools in the area.
Ardnamurchan, Mallaig and Lochaber high schools and the Gaelic medium units at Acharacle and Fort William RC primary schools are all operating at reduced Gaelic teacher levels.
The shortage means Lochaber High is unable to offer Gaelic to its S2 pupils, except for those in Gaelic medium, for the rest of this session.

This debate's starting to slip backwards.
The equality that Gaels have always wanted is to be taught in their own language, and Gaelic medium teaching gives them this.
For English-speaking children to lack the opportunity to learn Gaelic at high school is a pity, but it is by no means comparable to Gaelic-speaking children being forced through schooling in what is, to them, a foreign tongue.
Gaelic's current problem is lack of prestige and lack of opportunities for use. Gaelic-medium secondary education can help to address this. A few dozen additional kids who speak it to Standard Grade level does nothing.
The continual focus on the language itself also makes Gaelic teaching a very self-conscious career choice, whereas Gaelic-medium takes students who already plan on teaching anyway and provides them with additional opportunities in their chosen field.

'My own children attended the gaelic medium unit in Fort William and later in Ardnamurachan prior to moving to Spain and adapting to top grades with yet another foregin language although most english taught children whom have been attending the spanish school for longer aren't finding it so easy. Being taught in a second language opens up a wide variety of oppurtunity for all children and I am just amazed I still receive latest vacancies from Highland Regional Council and think in the last 5 years I have maybe seen one job advertisment for a gaelic medium teacher. I myself complained at the lack of advertising put forward by Highland Council for vacancies that existed over 3 years ago and the fact that no apparent measures were being taken to fill these back then. This should be documented in one of the various meetings attended by an array of parents of children whom attended Gaelic Medium Education in the council chambers in Fort William. The above situation does not surprise me only dissapoints.'
