Scottish government accused of playing the numbers game

Proposals by the Scottish Government to cut funding for the country’s main Gaelic voluntary organisation were yesterday described as a “numbers game” by its director.
Development quango Bòrd na Gàidhlig has announced it will withdraw all funding from TAIC, formerly known as CNSA, when present agreements expire in March 2011.
TAIC director Finlay MacLeod said the news could spell the end for his organisation.
Running for nearly 30 years, TAIC creates learning opportunities in Gaelic, for people of all ages from toddlers to adults, across Scotland."

You know I'm all for rocking the boat, but he's really pushing it now. Expect to see the Daily Mail pick up the "legal question" angle in a day or two.

Gee, thanks Finlay.

'Se sin an cunnart nach e? A h-uile càil sa Bheurla airson luchd na Beurla. 'Gaelic funding civil war' as a splash? Feumaidh mi aideachadh gur e gnìomhacas a th'ann ge-ta - Gàidhlig tro mheadhan na Beurla.

Cainnt.

Dè an "numbers game" - Postcode Lottery?

Tha cuimhne agam: 's dòcha o chionn 2 no 3 bliadhna fhuair mi post-d bho neach a bha an sàs ann an CNSA no TAIC mar a tha e a-nis - cha b' e Fionnlagh a bha seo. Chan eil cuimhne agam tuilleadh air susbaint a' phuist, ach tha cuimhne agam air na thuirt e mu dheidhinn cleachdadh "tha". Agus b' ann mì-mhodhail gu lèir a bha e. Rudan mar "Cha chleachd ach an luchd-ionnsachaidh 'tha'" amsaa. Ann an dòigh eile, sin iadsan, CNSA, a' feuchainn ri barailean àraid a stèidheachadh an inntinn an luchd-ionnsachaidh aca. Cia meud a dhaoine a tha, air a bhith tro làmhan CNSA/TAIC, a bhios ag èisteachd ri Gàidhlig, gun tuigse gu leòr, ach a' càineadh an labhraiche airson "tha ... tha ... tha"? Agus, ged nach eil mi cinnteach idir, tha mi a' creidsinn gur e seo - agus rudan coltach - a phut BnaG gu dh'Ùlpan an àite TAIC. Ro rag-bharaileach, gun fheallsanachd cheart.

Basically, 's e numbers game a th' ann - ma bhios an smaoin ud a' còrdadh ri daoine, no nach eil. Mur h-eil na h-àireamhan ann cha bhi taic ann. Mur h-eil taic ann cha bhi luchd-labhairt ùra ann. Mur h-eil luchd-labhairt ùra ann cha bhi Gàidhlig ann...

Dè chanas ud sa Bheurla: It's a catch 22.
