There are too many such people, who are in a public position where they can trot out the 'waste of public money' argument with more credibility (and more press coverage) than moaners in the pub. There is a combined effect that leads to such views becoming socially acceptable. I don't think I need give any historical examples of this phenomenon in the light of recent comments further north. :(
