Re: Dè tha thu a' dèanamh? / What are you doing?
Tha mi a' sgrìobh litir gu mo charaid Scott - tha e a' fuireach ann an UAE an-dràsda agus an uair sin
bidh mi a' leughadh leabhar "Summertime ri J.M. Coetzee" mu dhedhinn Chape Town anns an Africa na deas ann an 1972-1977.
'S e glè innteanach a th' ann an leabhar.
'feel free to correct my mistakes' I'm going to give Gaelic a real good go this year! Or, I hope so at least..
I'm writing a letter to my friend in United Arab Emirates, where he lives and then I'm reading a book about Cape Town in the 70s.

Tha mi an dùil gum bi do charaid glè thoilichte a bhith a' cluinntinn bhuat.
An robh thu fhèin ann an Afraca no ann an Aràibia a-riamh?
I expect your friend will be very happy to hear from you.
Have you ever been to Africa or Arabia yourself?
Tha thu a' dèanamh glè mhath!

Afraica a Deas - it's Afraca with an a because of the spelling rule
'S ann glè innteanach a tha an leabhar. - you use 'S ann with everything that's not a noun.

Afraca a Deas - it's Afraca without the i because of the spelling ruleGunChleoc wrote:Afraica a Deas - it's Afraca with an a because of the spelling rule

Tha mi a' credsinn gur e Afraga an litreachadh nas àbhaistiche, ach chì sibh, mar eisimpleir aig a' BhBC no aig A' Bhaile, Afraca mar an ceudna.
I think the more usual spelling is Afraga, but eg at BBC or Am Baile you can see Afraca as well.

Re: Dè tha thu a' dèanamh? / What are you doing?
Both are possible, I just took the one from Colin Mark. It doesn't make a difference, because it's an unstressed syllable. I asked my teacher about tiodhlac/tiodhlag, and he said that there wasn't anything explicit in GOC about this.

Ach na bi a' cur cus tìde seachad air a' choimpiutair agus air na fòraman seo

That's brilliant! I'm very pleased for you and I'm sure you'll have a great trip.
But don't spend too much time on the computer and these forums - use the time well, travel around the islands, and see that you speak to lots and lots of people!

Nì mi sin, Fhaoileig. Taing airson na dùrachdan. Bidh mi 'sna h-àiteachan gu math iomallach gun compiutar no fòn (a bheil aite mar sin ann fhathast?).
Chì mi sibh a dh'aithghearr.
I'll do that Faoileag. Thanks for your good wishes I'll be in some pretty remote places without computer or phone (is there still such a place?).
I'll see you all soon.

D' fhuair. Bha e gle blàsta! Cheannach ubhal, aran, agus caise.GunChleoc wrote:Tha mi a' ceannach biadh...

Did you find something tasty?
Yes. It was very tasty! I bought an apple, bread, and cheese.
Did I use d' fhuair correctly for yes? Did I get the correct past tense of ceannach? Is there a good resource on the web for Scottish Gaelic verb forms? What I have in my TY Dictionary has only so many verbs.
