Please sign petition to save the much-loved and incredibly useful and well-used School of Scottish Studies in its current accessible form. Culturally criminal plans by Edinburgh Uni to split it up and put much of it into storage. Other countries would be ashamed of doing that to their heritage.

Edinburgh Uni is, like all universities, trying to save money.
Like all universities, its aim is to do this by consolidating departments and non-academic facilities.
To that end, one of the things they're trying to do is eliminate departmental library and archive facilities (fewer librarians to pay, and it means only buying one copy of each journal for the central library, and not one for the central library, one for linguistics, one for French), so the SSS loses it's archive facility.
The other thing is that because they are trying to merge individual "schools" and "departments" into larger groupings they're calling "colleges" (because they've got no other word, even though they're not really "colleges"), some departments are getting split because they cross the boundaries of the proposed colleges.
Scottish Studies covers both scottish linguistics, which the university considers "language science", whereas Scottish literature gets put in the college involved in literary studies.
I can see why the people in the School of Scottish Studies are upset. Unfortunately, a lot of other schools and departments aren't happy either, and the difficulty is in finding a way to preserve the SSS which the rest of the university won't consider unfair treatment.
And, for that matter, which other universities won't consider unfair treatment, because this process isn't something unique to Edinburgh. Worth noting, too, that language departments are often the first to suffer in cutbacks....
