'of' - eg kind of you ?

Unread post by faoileag » Sun Aug 25, 2013 9:39 pm

How would you tr*nsl*t* 'of' in phrases like -

That's kind of you / that was good of him ?

Or would they be better expressed in completely different idioms?

Nach tu tha coibhneil / Nach math a rinn e ? (Though these are more emphatic.)

Waihaiuhl, thuirt thu "How would you..." agus mar sin bidh mi ag ràdh mar a bhithinnsa a' dèanamh. Smathaid gur ann ceàrr a tha seo, ach here goes.

'S dòcha gu bheil 3 seòrsa "of" sa Ghàidhlig, sin iad an tùiseal ginideach, "bho" ("o") agus "de" ("dhe", "a"). Nuair a chithear "riverside" (side of the river), sin an tùiseal ginideach - "taobh na h-aibhne", oir tha taobh (taobhan!) aig abhainn. Nuair a chithear "the Scots man" aidh, "An t-Albannach", ach a thaobh duine san fharsaingeachd a tha a' fuireach an seo, 's dòcha "an duine bho/à Alba". Nuair a chithear "a page of a book", 's dòcha "duilleag de leabhar". Ach chan eil seo gad fhreagairt. Feuch seo:-

That's kind of you - Sin coibhneil dhiot

That was good of him - Bha sin math dhe[th]

Ro litireil? 'S dòcha. Ach sin mo bheachd-sa.

Cha chreid mi nach eil na h-abairtean a thagh thu fhèin math, fhaoileag.

Tha Seonaidh ceart mu na 3 eadar-theangaichean aig "of" co-dhiù.

Bha sin math dheth....

Tha coltas car neònach air seo. Chan eil e a' ciallachadh "That was good of him"....Tha "gu" a dhìth, ach saoilidh mi gu bheil e a' ciallachadh "That was well off" ...agus chan eil e dèanamh mòran cèill mar sin fhèin...canar gu bheil daoine "math dheth" ach cha chuala mi riamh gum faod "nithean" a bhith "math dheth".

Nach math a rinn e - is more in the sense of an achievement, not an act of kindness. i.e. "Didn't he do well!"

That was kind of you .... Bha sin coibhneil dhìot. / Bha sin gasta. ("of" not expressed)

That was good of him - Bha sin gasta. / 'S è bha còir/coibhneil/gasta.

NB. The accent is to indicate that the 's è is lengthened.
