I need help with saying something.
"You may keep her,"

Bhithinnse a' dol còmhla ri neoni le 'a cumail' agus còmhla ri Stìophan le 'faodaidh':
faodhaidh tu a cumail.
That's if simple permission is meant (may=are allowed to), rather than potential or possibility (may=might/could) or obligation/need (ought/have to)
'Dh'fhaodadh tu a cumail' would be to me, 'You may well keep her', or 'You might keep her', or 'You could keep her', or even 'you ought to keep her'.
The conditional tense does actually usually imply a condition, a spoken or unspoken 'if', or 'it depends', or 'otherwise'.
This is also seen in the construction: Dh'fhaodadh gu.. = maybe, it's possible that..
That's how I would see it, co-dhiù.
Nit-picking mar as àbhaist!

Có-dhiubh... tha mise den bheachd gur e rud beag dissmissiv* a th' ann an abairt sin -- chan eil mi ga iarraidh, mar gum biodh. Am bitheadh an eadar-theangachadh cho sargàstaig*?
*Facail fior neo-Gaidhealach
