A NEW Gaelic TV channel has turned into a £15million farce — after ratings fell by 210,000 in five months.
Station chiefs last night admitted viewing figures for BBC Alba — set up to support the struggling language — could plummet yet FURTHER.
And critics insist the channel can no longer justify its recession-busting costs — with barely 58,000 Gaelic speakers left in Scotland.
Last night, opponent Michael Fry said: “At a time of stupendous economic crisis — I think there are better ways to spend our money.”
Still Game star Greg Hemphill launched the digital channel with presenters Evelyn Coull, Kirsteen MacDonald, and Fiona Mackenzie last September.
It followed pressure from Gaelic speakers and politicians after a census showed the number of Scots using the language had dropped to an all-time low of 58,650. Ratings peaked at 610,000 before slumping by a THIRD to just 400,000 in the latest figures.
