'Question Time' - Gaelic in Assynt

Unread post by Gràisg »

lethbhreac litir Comhlan Gaidhlig Asainte a fhuair mi bho Fionnlagh:

Dear All,

Thank you very much for agreeing to take part in this event. As I think you appreciate, this is very much a starting point to enable us to assess what we can do for and with Gaelic in Assynt, where the language has been badly neglected for many years and where economic survival has often been a hostile competitor for the attentions of local people. This is why we have attempted to design this event in such a way as to allow Gaelic to be considered in terms of the bearing it has or might have or should have on local issues. We don't want it to be seen as something other.

Just to confirm: the event will start at 7.30pm in Lochinver Village Hall on Saturday 28th February. I would suggest that we leave a window of up to two hours (i.e. 7.30-9.30pm) maximum depending on the attendance and the discussion, which I will chair.

I should add that we invited Michael Russell MSP to join us and I understand that I am due to receive a reply shortly but I do not yet know if he will be available.

If you are driving, the journey between Inverness and Lochinver takes about two hours.

If you require overnight accommodation to be arranged, please let me know by end of play tomorrow Tuesday 24th February.

Can I also ask you to let me know if you would like me to arrange a meal for you. I could organize sandwiches and tea/coffee for your arrival and/or a cooked meal as you prefer - either before or after the event. There are limited options in Lochinver so again, please let me know your preference by the end of tomorrow.

Possible Themes

What is the current condition of Gaelic in Scotland and the Scottish diaspora today?
Why does Gaelic matter?
Has Gaeldom been its own worst enemy?
Is Gaelic an underexploited asset?
What is it that provokes nonchalance or rejection of Gaelic?
Why should public money be invested in Gaelic?
How do or can the media promote Gaelic learning?
Is the Scottish Government serious in its support for developing Gaelic?
What real resources are available to promote Gaelic?
Where are all the teachers....?
Why is there no comprehensive modern dictionary of Gaelic?
What are academic bodies doing for Gaelic?
What was the justification for setting up BBC Alba (and why is it not on Freeview)?
Can Gaelic be of assistance to the Assynt economy today?
What can a local group like Comhlan Gaidhlig Asainte do to bring Gaelic into schools and to young people generally?

I would suggest that you aim to arrive at Lochinver Village Hall by 6pm so that we can gather and relax a little before the event.

If I have forgotten anything please feel free to call me on 01571-844359.

With all good wishes and wishing you a safe journey,

Grahame Perrie, Chairperson Comhlan Gaidhlig Asainte

Bha mise an lathair Horo, agus ag amas rudeigin a sgrìobhadh a dh'aithghearr. Chaidh a h-uile càil air adhart tro mheadhan na beurla agus mar sin tha agam a cur nam chuimhne na thuirt a h-uile duine agus cuideachd eadar-theangachaidh a dhèanamh. Ach a dh'aindeoin a' bheurla agus (cha deach a h-uile càil air adhart gun APC a' briseadh a-mach sa Ghàidhlig) 's e coinneamh air leth inntinneach a bh'ann agus làn fiosrachaidh.

San eadar-ama ge-tà seo dealbh dhut, 's bhochd gun do ghluais APC
