Why do these headbangers think that the apocalypse will come

Unread post by Gràisg »

Litir le David Hoyle sa P&J:

Central place of Gaelic
SIR, – As a Gaelic learner living in the lowlands, I am flabbergasted by the seeming flood of ignorance surrounding Gaelic-language road signs in the local media.

Gaelic signs are the overdue recognition that the Gaelic language has a central place in Highland and Scottish culture.

Surely most of your correspondents are aware that Gaelic was the majority language of the Highlands as recently as 50 years ago. Do they not think the native language has any rightful place in a post-devolution culture?

They are so quick to profess their Scottishness. Have they all forgotten what Scotland actually means? Or does being Scottish now mean being ignorant, narrow-minded and a bigot?

Surely it is bigotry to deny the central place of a different and essentially Scottish language in its heartland.

Why do these headbangers think that the apocalypse will come when Scottish place names are seen on our roads in their true form?

The overwhelming majority of place names in the Highlands come from Gaelic, having been inhabited by Gaels for at the very least 1,500 years.

As the Gaels would say, mo naire.

David Hoyle,

Very true my friend, but gaìdhlig isn't a very popular language these days, certainly not amongst english immigrants and people like these, its viewed as old-fashioned and stupid. These dudes seem to believe that having gaìdhlig on signs is silly because they seem to think it is extinct.
These are bad times indeed if people think arguing over bi-lingual signs is appropriate
