'More than £5m has been awarded to a research project set up to help the Scottish government encourage greater use of Gaelic.
The prospective University of the Highlands and Islands, UHI, along with the universities of Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow are involved.
Called Soillse, the Gaelic word for enlightenment, the partnership will use the funding to recruit staff.
Thirteen PhD places will also be created using the grant. '

Actually, I hate to say this, but even from my limited acquaintance with Gaelic and its development I could provide quite a few worthwhile suggestions for considerably less than £5M.

Let's just spend so much money working out what to do that we have nothing left to implement it with.
Faclair na Gàidhlig has been running what... 4 years? and nothing to show for it. Of course, it was underfunded to start off with.
Tobair an Dualchais has been running 3 years and has done lots of valuable work in digitising and rearchiving fading tape media, but there's very little publicly available material to show for it (for totally understandable copyright reasons -- it's hardly the project team's fault).
50 million is 71 Seachds or a third of BBC Alba's annual budget. It's 60 copies of Runrigs greatest hits or 90 paperback copies of Tilleadh Dhachaigh from Comhairle nan Leabraichean for each Gaelic speaker in Scotland.
That money could really create something, but instead it's just more talk, no more action. And most of the PhD places will probably go to people who have Gaelic degrees but don't have Gaelic accents. How's that going to help?
