I would be very much obliged if you could write the words “fifteen pounds only” on the cheque that you provided and also initial the cheque where you make the amendment. Unfortunately our Bank, The Royal Bank of Scotland, Kirkwall will not accept the cheque as it is.

Oir sgrìobh mi "còignotaicheandeugamhàin". Chuir mi litir chun a' Bhanca:-

Today, I received a letter from Orkney College advising me that a cheque I had written, with the sum to pay stated as “Còignotaicheandeugamhàin” and also displayed in figures as “£15==00s==”, was refused by you.
I have taken this matter up with my MP and my MSP and expect an apology from you, together with an undertakeing never again to refuse a cheque written out in Gaelic.
You should note that Gaelic is an official language of Scotland – along with English – so failure to accept a financial document on the grounds that it is written out in Gaelic is probably actually illegal within Scotland.

Dear Mr Roy

Your reference: Failure to honour cheques written in Gaelic

Thank you for your fax of 19 November addressed to the Customer Relations Manager. I am replying as I am responsible for customer service throughout The Royal Bank of Scotland Group.

I was disappointed to read your letter since it is Bank policy to accept cheques written in Gaelic. I have spoken with the manager of the Kirkwall branch and he has no knowledge of any refusal to accept such a cheque. Unfortunately, I have been unable to trace the cheque or account concerned and so I have been unable to find out what happened. However, if you could provide additional details such as a copy of the cheque and the account number concerned then I would be happy to investigate further.
