Gaelic quango may face grilling over grants distribution

Unread post by Gràisg »

'S ann dripeil trang a tha nàimhdean na Gàidhlig?
Gaelic enemies going into overdrive?

'A quango responsible for promoting Gaelic has handed out around £3 million in grants to organisations linked to its own board members.

Bòrd na Gàidhlig, set up as a statutory body in 2006, also gave at least £220,000 worth of awards to bodies tied to its chairman.

Mary Scanlon, a Tory MSP for the Highlands and Islands, is now calling on Audit Scotland to review the payments.

The Gaelic development agency was created by the last Labour-led Scottish Executive to develop the use of the ancient language.

With an annual taxpayer-funded budget of around £5.5m, the body funds groups that help promote the understanding of Gaelic.

However, the quango’s latest annual report, which covers 2008 to 2009, reveals that 26 grant approvals were made to organisations associated with board members.'

Hahahahahahaha.

They do realise, don't they, that these are companies and other bodies that are active in promoting Gaelic? That these people were put on the board because they were involved in bodies promoting Gaelic? If anyone really wants to criticise BnaG for handing out this money to these bodies, they'll have to identify places where it didn't go, but where it was deserved.

In fact I'd say the biggest waste of money was MyGaelic, which AFAIKwasn't built by a company linked to a board member!

Most quangos have people from the field they serve, and we'd be complaining if they didn't!

Now, how much is it that Pàrlamaid na h-Alba gives to Highlands and Islands Enterprise, in which I believe said Màiri is a key steak holder?

This needs challenged - and not by Arfur or anybody else Bòrdy.
