'Secretary of State for Scotland Jim Murphy has backed calls for Gaelic television channel BBC Alba to be launched UK-wide on Freeview.

Last September, the BBC Trust signalled its intention to review the impact and reach of BBC Alba, including options for its availability on digital terrestrial television.

However, such an approach could result in the BBC's main radio networks - Radio 1, 2, 3, 4, Five Live, Radio Scotland and World Service - not being available on Freeview between 5pm and 11pm every night.

Speaking last week in a parliament session, Anne McGuire MP - Labour member for Sterling - asked Murphy if he feels that the Trust will "respond positively" to calls for BBC Alba's launch on Freeview.

McGuire expressed her own view that the move would enable the channel's "quality output to be seen by a wider audience not only in Scotland, but across the UK".

In response, Murphy said that contrary to some negative reports about BBC Alba's performance and popularity, the channel has actually proved its worth.'
