'Six Gaelic-medium teachers are expected to be axed, while other Gaelic investment will also be cut. Backing for the Mod, Blas Festival and other popular events face a 30% grant reduction from next year.

Bord na Gaidhlig spokesman Hugh Dan MacLennan said: “There are matters of huge concern, but nothing’s been agreed yet.

“These are challenging times for everybody. We will take a considered view of it after the discussions of our board at a meeting on Tuesday.”

Gaelic committee chairman Hamish Fraser said there had been “an equal hit on efficiencies and savings” across the board.'
