Fòram na Gàidhlig

I am going to be in Scotland in August. The learning material for Gàidhlig, mainly books, is expensive via online resources (Amazon, iBooks, Chapters/Indigo) in Canada.

Can anyone point me towards a good store or chain of stores where I may be able to acquire some good Gàidhlig learning materials? As to location I will probably pass it along the way. I will be driving around Scotland for a month.

IE: Blas Na Gàidhlig ($133 CDN), Teach Yourself Gàidhlig dictionary ($92 CDN)

It's very hit-and-miss what you will find in normal bookshops around Scotland, but one place you really should visit is the Comhairle nan Leabhraichean in Glasgow.

You won't find a better place for Gaelic materials of all kinds.


If you're on the Isle of Skye, go the Sabhal MÒr Ostaig (SMO), the Gaelic college - they also sell Gaelic materials. (They also do summer courses.)

And there are always Gaelic-related events to go to around the place in the summer, expecially music. Look at the Fèisean programme too:

If you want to know about Gaelic events/ conversation circlkes (all levels) etc in Edinburgh, you can look here, and also ask to go on a monthly mailing list. Most things you can just drop in on.

I'll be through Glasgow twice. First when I land and then again once I start coming down the west coast. I will be sure to make a stop at the shop. Thank you for letting me know SMO does sell to others that are not enrolled in a course. I would love to take one, possibly next time . SMO is now on my to visit list .

Thank you for the blog and feisean links. I am definitely interested in the music and cultural events. That is a part of my purpose for the visit. That the 4 C's - Circles, Castles, Cairns, Cathedrals and family history ....

I am definitely excited!!

I think you can get a pretty good deal with a "Freedom of Scotland" rail pass

And, e.g., SMO is only a short busride (or medium-length walk) from Armadale, off the Mallaig-Armadale ferry

...or a rather longer bus-ride from Kyle of Lochalsh

"Freedom of Scotland" passes... I'm glad to see that those are still around.
When I was living in Arbroath, I would commute to Aberdeen daily, and at that time, it was cheaper for me to buy two Freedom passes every month than a season ticket
I covered many, many miles during that time, especially between Glasgow and Mallaig, and Inverness to Kyle!

It begins in Glasgow. Heads east, north, west and south from there around Scotland, England, into Wales (time permitting) and lands me at the Chalice Well.

It allows me to stop, within reason and traffic concerns, whenever and where ever I feel the need. 

Ma togair speuradaireachd ann an raon tursa, tha mi toil.
If I want to star gaze out in a field of standing stones I will do that.

Personally I have an issue with restrictions and limitations.  

My day to day is filled with that. 

Driving allows me this flexibility.
