My apologies to the GOC

Unread post by Níall Beag »

I've been rereading the original GOC and I have to apologise. While I disagree with them on several decisions (m.e. có-dhiubh -> cò-dhiù), in general it's a hell of a lot better than I thought -- just very difficult to read.

Sadly, the 2005 one is more readable but less thorough.

So a large amount of my disagreements seem to come from people overinterpreting them. (People still "correct" mi if I use "bithidh", for example.)

I still would like to see an academic justification for their decisions, though.

AFAIK bithidh is just the stressed form of bidh anyway, which would make them both equally correct :P

Just like thubhairt and thuirt.

'S e leabhar beag a th'ann le "Gaidhlig ur" ann e.

Mar:

An-drasda > An-drasta
A bhi > A bhith
Dannsadh > Dannsa

Tha e aice cuideachd "New spelling and words":

Bhideo > Video
Bhiosa > Visa
Bhodca > Vodka
Bhasa > Vase

Tha e agam air PDF. bith mi a' cuir e dhut.

It is a small book with "New Gaelic" in it.
Also new words.
A little grammar too.
Essential if you want to be up to date.
I have the PDF version. I will send you it.

Tha rudan nach eil mi gan tuigsinn mun "orthograffick convenchens" sin. Carson "dràsda" -> "dràsta", "ASBO" -> "ASPO" (bàr beag...) ach chan e "sgoil" -> "scoil"? "Tha Maighstir Goc a' fuireach anns a' Ghearastan, agus 's e Alastair a th' air. A bheil sibh ag aithneachadh a' charaid, Ms. Mhoireastan? No, 's dòcha, Ms. Voireastan?" Anns a' Chuimris, chan eil "sd" idir. Ach tha "sb" is "sg". Spòrs - sbort, sgoil - ysgol, an Spàinn - yr Ysbaen (no Sbaen), Albannach - Sgotyn (no Albannwr), èisteachd - eistedd (uill, tha "eistedd" a' ciallachadh "suidhe", ach tha mi cinnteach gu bheil ceangal an sin). Curiouser is curiouser, abair Alice...

Chanainn-sa gum bitheadh e na b'fheàrr dhan chànan nan cruthaicheadh iad faclan ùra an àite na a bhith cleachdadh faclan le litreachadh Bheurla, no cleachd faclan Gàidhlig far a bheil faclan Beurla a tha air an cleachdadh an-dràsta!

Chan e faclan Beurla a th'ann an Video, Visa, Vodka no Vase - 's e faclan Laidin no Ruisis a th'annta!

Dè mu dheidhinn: "Chìmi" an àite "Bhideo" no "Uisgeag" an àite "Bhodca"?

Cha tuirt mu gur iad faclan Beurla a bh'annta idir, ach faclan le litreachadh Bheurla! :priob:

Bha mi a feuchainn a ràdh far nach eil facal Ghàidhlig a th'ann, bhiodh e na b'fheàrr facal ùr a chruthachadh bho eadar-theangachadh an fhacail no dòighean eile an àite a bhith an litreachadh Bheurla a chleachdadh.

Chan eil mi cinnteach mu dheidhinn Chìmi, ach 's toigh leam Uisgeag :P
