Dhachaigh: A Celebration of Murdo Macfarlane

The Herald
Dhachaigh: A Celebration of Murdo Macfarlane
Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow
****

Someone once said that Lewis was full of potatoes and singers. Leaving aside the tuber harvest, the island certainly has its singing riches, which were strongly represented in this concert celebrating the songs and the spirit, through works in sympathy with his own, of Lewis bard Murdo Macfarlane.

It took its cue from the exhibition about Macfarlane's life and work by the estimable Stornoway arts centre An Lanntair, which inspired an opening concert at the HebCelt 2007 festival and subsequent album of the same name, Dhachaigh. This latest airing encompassed recordings of Paul Mounsey's majestic overture and finale, and notably sunny on-screen images that made one wonder why Macfarlane ever left Lewis - his homesickness and speedy return being a recurring theme.

Tha CD ann cuideachd ach 's e seinneadairean eile (an an cuid) a th' air.
Faidaidh mi a mholadh, ged-thà - measgachadh tairraingeach.
