Dè mu dheidhinn dìreach "còmhdach" airson "casing"? Air neo, "dùbladh" a tha ciallachadh "shief(of sword)" a-rèir Dwelly. No, "slige"(shell) a' choimpiutair?

'S e slige a fhuair mi cuideachd, ach cha robh mi cinnteach. Bu toil leam na faclan a chur ris na cleachdar na daoine dha-rìribh, ach cò dhe fhaighneachd

Fhuair mi cuid anns an eadar-theangachadh Vista is Opera, ach chan eil an dà chuid a' cleachdadh an aon rud an còmhnaidh :balla:

Abair fuasgladh simplidh!

Agus dè mu dheidhinn IDE/SATA plug, tha abairt a dhìth orm air a shon fhathast. Am biodh "cnag IDE/SATA" ceart gu leòr?

A bheil mearachd sam bith ann leis na faclan eile?

Cha bu toil leam "slighe" (shell) air sgath 's gu bheil "shell" a' ciallachadh rudan mu bhathar bhog ann an siostam Unix (? Dhiùnaiogs?)

As a statement of anti-Beurlaism, I always call a CD or DVD player a "leughadair CD/DVD", on the model of the Romance languages.

Etymologically it makes more sense anyway -- the term player comes from player pianos, where the device actually did "play" the musical instrument.

Moreover, in Gaelic, you didn't "cluich" an instrument, you would "seinn air". "Cluich" was for games and stage plays.

But then the etymological incorrectness of the "cluicheadair CD" is perhaps address in "cluicheadair DVD", because it's more about drama than music anyway!

That said, a CD-ROM drive is different from a CD player anyway, and a DVD drive is similarly different from a DVD player -- neither actually "plays" the content: they just "read" and "write" the data to/from discs.

But I always did think too much, didn't I?

... pluga?

Tha e simplidh, soilleir 's air a chleachdadh sa choimhearsnachd mu thràth 's chan eil e briseadh riaghailt fuaimneachaidh sam bith.

OK, now while my comment about DVD "player" might seem a bit anal, I've just cast my eye over it again, and I'm more concerned by DVD "burner".

Why? It doesn't have a clear intrinsic meaning. Why do we have DVD "burners" in English? Why did we have CD "burners"? Because CD was short for CD ROM -- "CD burner" was a contraction of "CD ROM burner", modeled on the term "(P)ROM burner". In the old days, we used to program permanent memory chips by running a high current through them and physically burn out the components that we didn't want.

Now technically you do still "burn" a CD/DVD with a high-power laser, but it's a meaningless technical detail to the average punter (cf "cell phone" -- who can tell you the technical details of a cellular digital mobile phone network?) and the idea of a "writer" or "engraver" seems a much more natural fit.

So "Sgrìobhadair DVD", maybe, or "breacair", "ciocht", "gearradair", "gràbhadair", "gràbhalaiche", "gràbhalair", "gràbhaltaiche" or "rionaiche" . (How handy is the new Dwelly site...?)

But yes, that's unless there's already a common consensus among native speakers.

(I was also going to look up carpentry terms in Dwelly to see if there was some kind of joint that would function as an analogy for a plug and socket, but as Akerbeltz says, everyone says "pluga" already and it makes no sense to try to force people to use anything else.)

Tapadh leibh uile! Keep the suggestions coming :D

I'd love to put this on the homepage, but then we need to be sure first there won't be any nonsense in it.
