Madainn mhath a h-uile daoine.
'S mise Florian agus tha mi a' fuireach 's ag obair anns an Eilbheis. 'S e eolaiche stòr-data agus <photographer> a th' orm.
'S e Gearmalteach a th' orm agus tha a' Ghearmailtich, an Fhraingich agus Beurla agam (a bheil facal le a' Ghermailtich nas Eilbheiseach cuideachd? Airson, chan eil e còmhla ris a' Ghermailtich idir.). An-dràsta tha mi ag ionnsachadh Gàidhlig leis a' Chursa Inntrigidh aig Sabahl Mòr Ostaig.
Good morning everybody.
My name is Florian (GreasOrt as I am always a bit impatient with myself) and I live and work in Switzerland. I am a Database Expert and Photographer (see Website). I am German and speak german, french and english (is there a word for Swissgerman too? For it is not like German at all). At the moment I am learning Gàidhligh with the Cursa Inntrigidh of Sabhal Mòr Ostaig.

A bheil an cùrsa gu math ? Tha mi a smaoineachadh air an-dràsda.
Welcome. Though I have only a couple of words of German, the two are obviously different when I hear them. I don't know about a name. Eilbheis perhaps ?
Is the course good ? I'm thinking of doing it myself.

I heard "Eilbheis" for Swiss German. It's the word they use at SMO but it might just be SMO Gaelic.

Seadh! Ceart gu leòr 's e Eilbheis an t-ainm! Just like I should have learned it at SMO
I tried to learn Gaelic on my own with books and audio files. Also tried different online ressources but eventually failed everytime with the pronounciation.
So, just speaking for myself, yes, I can really recommend the course. It is well structured. The sound files and workbooks are of very high quality and the weekly telephone tutorials are well led. The pace however is rather high. But there are plenty of opportunities to ask questions if you are unsure. I am now in the second Earann and will certainly continue.

As a language, I'd a thought that "Elvish" (fairy language) was what "Eilbheis" was...

Well, it's not the first time I hear to joke about Elvis ... Pas de problème pour l'allemand. Anglais ou bien Gaelic vont très bien.
I try the following in Gàidhlig and hope it is comprehensible:
Bha mi glè thoilichte gun robh "Elvish" agus Eilbheis coltach ri sin. Ach, tha mi cinnteach ged-thà gu bheil e a' tighinn bho "Helvetia". 'S e an t-ainm a th' air an Eilbheis.
That's what I meant: I was at first very pleased (and a bit proud) that Elvish and Eilbheis sound so similar. I am sure however, that it comes from Helvetia, which is the "latin" name for Switzerland
