Culloden

Unread post by An Gobaire »

Culloden - Cuil fhodair. In modern Gaelic it means fodder-nook. In the year 1238 the spelling was Cullodyn. It has nothing to do with fodder. It comes from lodan, a little pool. It means nook of the pool.*

Mac an Tàilleir has "Cùil Lodair. This may be "the secluded spot at the shelving slope"."

Of course it makes sense for the spelling to have changed. Even today, the events at Culloden still resonate through the hearts of the Scottish Highlanders. Culloden is still quite a touchy area in our History and ranks alongside Glencoe. So it does make sense that the Gaelic for Culloden has changed to match this feeling.

The point of me posting this was to show that the locals of the area are adamant that the official Gaelic for this placename is wrong. Culloden is a few miles from Strathnairn, and the local Gaelic speakers of the area referred to it as Cùl Lodain, not Cùl Fhodair. (according to Strathnairn Heritage Society)

Sin inntinneach. Tha seann fhacal Cuimris "cul" a chiallaicheas "bothan" amsaa: cuideachd facal ann an Cuimris an latha an-diugh a chiallaicheas "caol". Sa Chuimris, tha facal "odyn" a chiallaicheas "àth" - chan e sin "àite far an tèid neach thar aibhne" ach "àite far an dèanar poitean". Mar sin, 's dòcha gun ciallaich "Cullodyn" "an t-ionad-crèadhaidh" no "an t-àth caol". An ann comasach a bhiodh seo, a roinn eachdraidh amsaa?

Tha e cumanta gu leòr uaireannan sa Ghàidhlig airson fuaim "r" a bhith air faclan air an litreachadh le "n".

Bha mi dhen bheachd nach robh ainmean-àite Gàidhlig "oifigeach" ann, agus AÀA (aig a tha Cùil Lodair) an aon bhuidheann a tha a' feuchainn "uniformity" air soidhnichean amsaa a ràinig, ach iad gun chumhachdan ùghdarrais. :?:

'S dòcha gur e "oifigeil" am facal ceàrr, ach 's e an t-ainm a thathar a' cleachdadh sa h-uile raon oifigeil as aithne dhomhsa.
